Familiebedrijf Leeuwin Estate, een van de vijf eerste wineries van het nu beroemde Margaret River-district in West-Australië, staat onder leiding van twee generaties die samenwerken met een team van zeer bekwame wijnmakers om consequent wijnen te produceren die gerangschikt zijn onder de beste ter wereld. In 1972 identificeerde de legendarische Napa Valley-wijnmaker, Robert Mondavi, de toekomstige locatie van de Leeuwin-wijngaard als ideaal voor de productie van premiumwijn. Hij bood Denis en Tricia Horgan al vroeg mentorschap bij de transformatie van hun veehouderij tot Leeuwin Estate. Leeuwin bracht hun eerste vintage uit in 1979 en kwam in de internationale schijnwerpers te staan toen Decanter Magazine zijn hoogste aanbeveling gaf aan de 'Art Series' Chardonnay 1981. De internationale onderscheidingen volgden mekaar op en Leeuwin bekwam de status van een top wijngoed. Leeuwin viert de combinatie van goede wijn, eten, kunst en muziek en beschikt over een bekroond restaurant, een cellar door en een kunstgalerie. Het landgoed staat ook bekend om het organiseren van spectaculaire concerten en verwelkomt bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Eén van Australië’s leading wineries voor zowel wit als rood.

    A layered nose of white peaches, poppy seed, dried lime and white tea. Medium-bodied with sharp yet well- balanced acidity that compliments the fresh stone fruit palate. Persistent, pleasantly dry and mineral at the finish. A bit of herbs and flowers, too. A charmer. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

    There’s a more textural element to the Art Series compared to the Siblings Sauvignon Blanc, yet this is also lively and full of bright, tropical fruit laden with lime, fresh basil and even a smidge of white pepper and lots of detail. Zesty, crunchy acidity and rather uplifting on a warm day.

    The fruit for this 2022 Art Series Sauvignon Blanc was sourced from Block 17 on the estate. The wine is far more restrained and yet more powerful than the 2022 Siblings Sauvignon Blanc tasted beside it. The flavor draw across the palate is juicy and extended as it unfurls in the mouth, where you get blackberry bramble, snow pea, apple skin, leafy herbs, white tea and brine. Thirty percent of this cuvée was fermented in one-year-old Bordelais coopers. The reason for this is to highlight the phenolic tension. This is bolstered by very minimal yet still significant skin-contact time. The vines were originally planted to Shiraz in 1975 and grafted over to Sauvignon Blanc in 1981. The length of flavor in the mouth is impressive, certainly when considering the fact that it is restrained and insistent.
