Leeuwin Estate - 'Art Series' Shiraz
The Real ReviewDeep ruby core with a bright purple tint at the rim. Fragrant and lifted with raspberry, dark cherry, musk and peppery spices leaping from the glass. Medium in weight, dark fruits are plump and brightened with a fine line of acidity. All around that core we see a melange of exotic spices and an undertone of nori savouries. Great length, with a fine grit of tannins driving and drying the finish.
DecanterLeeuwin Estate is investing heavily in Shiraz and it shows. New plantings, clones, whole-bunch ferments and bigger barrels produce a vibrant, mid-weight style with riffs of spicy szechuan, fragrant white pepper, clove and violet to the firm red currant and cherry core; contrapuntal, creamy blackberry and crunchy pomegranate lend tension and twang. Fine-grained tannins and subtle oak, fruit and fresh acidity assert its cooler climate credentials.
James HallidayIf you've ever watched mercury being poured, you'll understand what I mean when I say that the tannins have a seamless liquidity about them. They shape the fruit and allow it passage over the tongue and into the sunset of its finish... The layers of flavour seem never-ending.
