Más Que Vinos
In 1998 ontmoetten drie wijnfanaten mekaar in Rioja. Alexandra Schmedes, Duitse oenologe, had net ervaring opgedaan in Duitsland, Zuid-Afrika, Frankrijk & Italië. Gonzalo Rodriguez en Margarita Madrigal (die zich liever May laat noemen) werkten in Spanje, Italië en Frankrijk. De drie konden het goed met elkaar vinden. De hechte vriendschap leidde een jaar later tot de oprichting van hun consultancy bedrijfje dat ze ‘Mas que Vinos’ (meer dan wijn) doopten. Hun droom was echter een eigen wijnproject. Ze kochtten magnifieke oude wijngaarden in Dosbarrios, het dorpje waar Gonzalo opgroeide, op 60 km ten oosten van het prachtige Toledo. Ze doopten hun wijn Ercavio, naam die verwijst naar een Romeinse nederzetting. Vanaf de start werden de modern gevinifieerde Ercavio-wijnen in Spanje zelf maar ook ver daar buiten met open armen onthaald. De prijs/kwaliteit-verhouding was opvallend en is dit vandaag de dag nog meer dan ooit. Heerlijke Tempranillo-wijnen met karakter wat rood betreft. Ook zeker niet te onderschatten is de aparte Ercavio Blanco op basis van Airén en Sauvignon Blanc. Een bijzonder sterk gamma! Naast de succesvolle budgetvriendelijke Ercavio-reeks, vinifieert het trio Schmedes, Rodriguez, Madrigal vanaf 2001 en enkel in goede millésimes een beperkte topcuvée: La Plazuela. De naam ‘La Plazuela’ verwijst naar het pleintje in het dorpje Dosbarrios waar het ouderlijk huis van Gonzalo gelegen is. Het pittoreske, oude keldertje gebouwd in 1851 herbergt nog steeds de typische Tinajas (grote kruiken in aardenwerk), waar La Plazuela rijpt. Twee typische druivensoorten van de regio, Cencibel & Garnacha, komende van meer dan 30 jaar oude wijngaarden en zijn de basis voor deze magnifieke wijn.

    The very spicy 2018 Viña El Señorito de Ercavio is a single-vineyard Cencibel planted 25 years ago on limestone-rich soils. It fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and matured in second use French oak barrels for nine months. It's ripe, fruit-driven and modern but with the rustic Cencibel character and some dusty tannins. 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020.

    2018 was clearly a great vintage for Más Que Vinos, with some of the best wines they have produced since they started in 1999. That is the case for the 2018 La Plazuela, the finest Cencibel I know, complemented with 20% Garnacha Tintorera (all organic and certified), which produces a characterful wine with lovely chalky rusticity and an explosive and powerful personality at 15% alcohol. It fermented in a small stainless steel vat with indigenous yeasts and then was transferred to a tinaja for malolactic, where it matured for one year followed by 18 months in French oak barrels and then was put back into the tinaja until bottling. This is a wine that reflects the sun and the countryside of La Mancha like few others. Bravo!
