Absolute topper uit de minder bekende Jumilla-regio in Spanje (gevinifieerd door grootmeester Chris Ringland (bij Parker goed voor 100/100). De kwaliteit springt meteen uit het glas bij de geuraanzet: aards, champignons, leder, blauwe bes en zwarte bessenjam. Ook de smaak zit bijzonder complex maar soepel ineen waarin we blauwe en zwarte bessen terugvinden, wat kruiden en een licht pepertje. Krachtige wijn met een uitzonderlijke balans en lengte. Adembenemende wijn van zeer hoog niveau.

De Jumilla-regio stond jarenlang synoniem voor bulk en goedkoop. En nog steeds worden er veel banale wijnen geproduceerd. Miguel Gil, eveneens eigenaar van het topdomein Juan Gil, koos uit respect en liefde voor zijn regio (en grote wijn!) voor kwaliteit in plaats van kwantiteit. Voor het miniproject van Bodegas El Nido doet hij beroep op de Australische topwijnmaker Chris Ringland (bij Parker goed voor 100/100…) Op deze kleine Bodega worden 2 wijnen gemaakt: Clio & El Nido. De 16 ha Monastrell wijngaarden van 60 jaar oud prijken op terrassen die noordoost georiënteerd zijn. Verder werden er 25 jaar geleden in dezelfde regio 12 ha Cabernet Sauvignon op de heuvels met oriëntatie noord aangeplant. Vandaag bieden deze unieke wijngaarden druiven van topkwaliteit die door het duo Gil-Ringland magnifiek veredeld worden tot Spanje’s meest aristocratische wijnen. Grote klasse!

    Tasting two completely different vintages of the same wine is very revealing, and having the 2015 Clio next to the 2014 showed how each of them revealed the character of the vintage. 2015 is a very complete and balanced year, resulting in classic, powerful wines with concentration and balance, and all that is needed to age in bottle. This is a similar blend as the 2014, mostly Monastrell with 30% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for almost two years in French and American oak barrels. The oak is there, but it feels like the fruit is able to integrate it with some more time in bottle. In general, there is a lot more balance and freshness than in the 2014, and the character of the Monastrell is a lot more noticeable than the Cabernet. This should develop nicely in bottle.
