Pegasus Bay 'Virtuoso' Chardonnay
Otago Daily TimesOpens to burnt match and charry hints with peach and oatmeal popping up. Rich and fat on entry with a lovely silky mouthfeel, completely filling
your palate. Power yet finesse here, nicely balanced acidity, some tannins giving structure and a fresh, citrusy lift on the long finish. A serious
wine that will repay time in the cellar. Excellent
Stephen Tanzerungrafted 30-year-old vines; fermented in barrel with wild yeasts and aged in one-third new oak, with half of the wine going through malolactic fermentation): Bright medium yellow. Sexy musky reduction to the perfumed aromas of stone fruits, tropical fruits, nutmeg, clove, minerals and nutty oatmeal; reminded me a bit of Meursault. Wonderfully lush and rich but at the same time energetic and firm, with its stone fruit flavours perfectly balanced by spices and flinty minerals; salty and rich in extract. Still wound tight on the finish, even a bit unyielding, this rather penetrating
Chardonnay begs for a few years of patience. As idiosyncratic as this winery's Sauvignon-Semillon blend and every bit as fascinating.
Cameron DouglasA powerful, rich and full bouquet of stone fruit, oak and spice: baked peach and nectarine with white spiced oak, new oak and a distinctive savoury/leesy complexity - even a flint-like edge. On the palate - dry, firm, youthful and intense with fabulous Chardonnay flavours of ripe peach and stone fruits, grapefruit, nutty oak and loads of texture; cashew, grapefruit peel, lees and some sulphide-like suggestions; full-bodied and rich. Great wine!
