Herdade do Rocim 'Clay Aged' Tinto
ParkerThe 2019 Terracotta Clay Aged red is a blend of 40% Alicante Bouschet with the rest being equal parts Trincadeira and Touriga Franca, all aged in 140-liter clay amphorae for 16 months. It comes in at 14.2% alcohol. Tight, plus a little earthy and a bit meaty, this is gorgeously structured as well as nuanced in its flavors. Precise and pointed, this graceful Tinto shows off beautiful mid-palate finesse. It concludes with a long and gripping finish. It’s not fully in the mainstream in terms of its flavor profile, but as a wine aged in clay, it is balanced and relatively neutral. Just now, it’s a little unready, but it gives every sign of being brilliant if you can give it a couple of years in the cellar. It should age well thereafter, but there obviously is not a lot of track record. Finally, it also demands a food pairing. It won’t be so great if used as a simple sipper.
